From Trinidad to Yamanashi’s Vineyards
Meet Franklin Hutchinson, the first Black grape farmer in Japan, who brought Caribbean spirit to Yamanashi’s vineyards. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Franklin moved to Japan 28 years ago and founded Rosy Grapes after falling in love with Japanese grapes.
"I love grapes... I said, you know, I would like to do grape farming one day."
With no prior experience, Franklin transformed a jungle-like plot into a thriving vineyard, harvesting one ton of premium Shine Muscat grapes annually. Supported by local farmers, he blends Caribbean music with Japanese techniques, creating a unique cross-cultural legacy.
Witness early growing season as young grape leaves flourish and tiny grape clusters form. This moment reveals the artistry behind successful grape cultivation.
